On April 30th, 2025, we hosted another insightful IFCN Monthly Researcher Meeting, bringing our global network together for knowledge exchange and sector updates.
A key highlight: IFCN researcher Chetroiu Rodica presented on
“The Dairy Sector in Romania – Situation, Trends & Challenges.”
Here are three key takeaways:
- Romania’s dairy sector is still dominated by small to mid-sized farms with limited modernisation.
- Cow’s milk production has declined by 12% between 2014 and 2023 — driven by a shrinking number of farms, cows, and rising competition from imports. The growth of commercial farms hasn’t been enough to reverse the trend.
- Although milk prices at the farm gate increased by 74.4% in the past decade, farmers still face economic pressure due to high input costs (feed, energy, fuel).
These insights are part of our ongoing effort to connect researchers globally and strengthen the foundation for data-driven progress in the dairy sector.

The export potential to EU and Middle Eastern markets, especially if they are artisanal, organic and local, along with the increased preference for quality local dairy products, such as artisanal cheeses, natural yogurts, locally sourced pasteurized milk, can help grow Romania’s dairy sector
